Artifacts and Characterisrtics of the Novice Teacher # 4
Characteristic number 4 states that the novice teacher should be a facilitator of learning for all students. This means that the teacher can provide resources to help students better understand concepts. Students all have a variety of learning styles so it is important for teachers to have different ways of presenting and assessing information. I recently taught a lesson on weather and how it affects what you wear. We had a discussion about what they wore that day and why. I then pulled up a weather temperature map of the United states to provide a visual for the students. We then talked about how the weather is in different places like Hawaii, Florida, Alaska, ect. We talked about what they may be wearing there and what kinds of activities they would be doing there. After we finished out discussion, the students went back to their seats and drew pictures of the weather in Morgantown of what they were wearing and what activities they could be doing. They also drew a picture of another place that had different weather and what they would be wearing and an activity they would be doing. Several of the student have special needs so for them during station time they were able to get on the computer and play a dress the bear game. They would look out the window in the computer and see what they weather was. They would then decide what the bear should wear. This gave them a more visual way of seeing how the weather affects what you wear and what you do. It was also better for me to see that they understood because their drawing skills are not on level so this allows the teacher to see what the bear was wearing.

Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that Characteristic number 4 is a great match for your lesson due to the fact that it states that the novice teacher should be a facilitator of learning for all students. You evidently, within your lesson, provided additional resources to help students better understand concepts. Students all have a variety of learning styles so it is important for teachers to have different ways of presenting and assessing information.I really liked that you modified this lesson to meet especially the students with special needs. I feel that it was a great way to incorporate technology and allow them to expereince what should be worn through a computer game. I feel that all students benefited from your lesson and your assessments were wonderfully designed for you could clearly gain an idea of who grasped your lesson and who did not. I feel that this form of a lesson could be taught at the first grade level as well.
Nice Job, and great assessments! You clearly found the right characteristic that matches your lessons. You may also be able to find another Characteristic that would go along with the fine and creative arts for this lesson.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Convey
Your lesson included all modalities of learning styles and a way for SWD to be included. It would be a good idea to allow those who may struggle with some assignments who have not been identified or classified to use the same avenues of learning as your SWD. That is a way to help all students be successful and not singling out those with disabilities. Nice lesson!
