Artifacts and Characterisrtics of the Novice Teacher # 9

The artifact I chose was an introductory lesson about the Olympics. This lesson presented students with a power point presentation about the winter Olympics. As a class they discusses when and where the Olympics started, where they are this year, the different sports played in the winter Olympics, the opening ceremonies, and national anthem rituals. I put this lesson as characteristic number 9, The novice teacher should be aware, of and have respect for human diversity, because the teacher in this lesson presents students with information about other cultures celebrating at the opening ceremonies, traditions of the lighting of the torch, and respectful ways of singing national anthems. Students learned the meaning of the Olympic flag, which represents all the large bodies of land. They learned that even though we are different we all remain friends at the Olympics and the Olympic rings interlock to signify friendship at the games. This lesson helped open students realize that even though all the people have different cultures and traditions, we all are equal and friends at the Olympic games. The students got to create an Olympic flag of their own and write on the back, something interesting that they learned about the Olympics.

  1. Amanda! Excellant job! I feel that characteristic number 9 fits your lesson perfectly. It is wonderful to educate students on what the Olympics are and the true meaning behind the games. I really like how you opened up to your students and explained to them the importance of friendship, human diversity, and sportsmanship. Teaching students about diversity at such a young age is extremely important and I feel that you taught these students a very valuable lesson. I also really like how you allowed them to create their own flags and opened up their thoughts by having them write an interesting fact that they learned about the Olympics. Nice Job! I feel that you should most certainly keep this lesson plan for your portfolio in the future!

  2. I agree with Amanda. This would be an excellent lesson plan to expand upon when you have your own classroom. You could have your own opening ceremony and let students research their own heritage and create items for the opening ceremony that reflect on them. You have a lesson plan that could really grow into a unit covering more than just diversity!!

  3. I like the comments Holly made...I think there are ways to make this lesson go deeper into the issue of diversity. It's important to find ways to have students connect with their own culture and connect it with others'.
